White Castle Hamburgers - Almost!

By

"These are really close to the real thing. My family was in heaven! They're great for dinner, football parties, or kid's birthday parties. I'm not real fond of White Castle myself but I gobbled these up. Note: To freeze: Assemble hamburgers less the condiments. Flash freeze, wrap in plastic wrap, put in a ziplock bag and label. To heat: Microwave until heated through."

Ingredients

  • Burgers:
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground chuck
  • 1 (4 tablespoon) envelopes onion soup mix
  • 1 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 24 small square dinner rolls
  • American cheese (optional)
  • pickles (optional)
  • .....................................
  • Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup mustard
  • 1/2 cup ketchup

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 400°F.

Hamburgers: Mix first 6 ingredients and press into an ungreased 10 by 15 inch jelly roll pan till the meat fills the whole pan. Prick with a fork. Bake for 10 minutes. Drain off juices (if there's a lot of excess). Cool.

Cut into 24 squares. Place squares on dinner rolls. Combine mustard and ketchup and spread on rolls. Top with pickles and cheese, if desired.

This makes 12 servings of 2 little hamburgers each.

Tried this recipe for the first time and its a winner. The title is perfect- almost white castle. Its pretty much there. As a native new yorker who would buy em by the sackful, I would say these would definitely make the cut when ur craving. Kids and hubby loved them. I used 2 lbs ground chuck and spread a layer of dehydrated onion on the bottom of the pan. Toasted the buns first(just our preference), then used the damp paper towel in the microwave to get that steam feel. Wonderful recipe. Will use it again.

For almost White Castle burgers that are the bomb all you need is dehydrated onion or onion flakes. Put them in water to rehydrate and make patties with only salt and pepper. Add a little water to your pan along with onion and let them cook until done. That's it. My cousin made these and swear I thought I was eating the real thing until she told me she made them. I didn't believe her so she had to make some more. That's how good they were. This recipe is not good to me.

This tasted just like White Castle's except WORD OF WARNING...I used ground sirloin 90/20 and after baking mopped up extra fat with paper towels. The buns did not have the inner slightly soggy taste or texture. I also used slightly less onion dip and minced an onion and sprinkled one pan with onion on top and one pan with onion on bottom before baking. No difference in my opinion. I also spread the beef mixture on the sheet and used my rolling pin on top of the wax paper to cover the pan and then pricked with a fork. Next time, I will go against my instinct to mop up the fat and leave it to soak into the bun. It didn't matter so much because my people scarfed them down.

I cut onion and put it on the pan before I put the burger on it. I made the burger as directed.

Made this for the fam, and everyone flipped. Way super easy to make and so tasty. I didn't have onion soup mix in the house so I used 1 huge Tablespoon of dried minced onion. It was wonderful that way and my daughter told me not to change anything about the way I made them. Thanks for sharing this great recipe, it will be getting used a lot in our house come winter time. Thanks again!

Oh yeah! I'll tell you how great these were: My son's new gf (who normally acts like a 'delicate flower') was here ... she put these down like a truck driver! I added an insane amount of re-hydrated onion to the top before cooking but only because we're hardcore. :) Thanks for a great recipe!

These are the closest that I have ever found to the actual thing. I made a batch, and we ate about half of them. The others I froze and and they warmed up perfectly. Why pay ridiculous prices for frozen white castle burgers from the market, when you can make way more, for a fraction of the price. Thank you!!!

They tasted kind of like little meatloafs! 4 year old DD loves them and that's the important part. And these are so much cheaper than buying the frozen White Castle burgers at the grocery store. Next time I am going to get much leaner meat. 80/20 ground beef seemed to lose too much in juices - I was only able to get about 14 patties out of this.

I've got to try this as I dearly LOVE "White Castle" hamburgers, but non in my area, & too expencive in markets. But you forgot the most important--to me !!--condiment ! Dehydrated diced onions on top of burger, before the pickles!!!

FANTASTIC! I tried both the Hawaiian Sweet Rolls and Sara Lee White Rolls (both are square) Everyone preferred the Sara Lee Rolls, steamed in paper towels in the microwave. **THESE FREEZE WELL** To freeze, I made the meat mixture up ahead of time, baked several trays worth, scored the meat into squares without cutting completely. When cooled, I wrapped first in press n seal, then heavy aluminum foil and froze one 'sheet' of meat at a time. These stack well once frozen, and I have used a 'sheet' as far out as 6 weeks with good results. To use: defrost, then fully reheat squares, THEN assemble the burgers. The rolls don't freeze well already assembled with the meat - they get soggy even with the meat already frozen before assembling and freezing. I can't tell you how handy these are to have on hand in the freezer....! I am now being constantly pestered to have these when family stops by.

These were so easy to make and so good! We made these exactly as the recipe stated and can't think of anything we would do differently. Thanks for a great recipe! This one is definitely a keeper.

Made exactly as directed and they turned out perfect! Thank you for posting!

I've never been to a White Castle, but I know Krystals is really close to the same thing. I am not a fan of Krystals, but these are incredibly good. I made them for the Krystal-holics in my family and they loved it. You can make enough to freeze too, which is awesome.

Yummmm, very close to the real thing too. The only thing i changed about this recipe was the "jelly roll pan". I didn't have one of these, only a dark baking dish. I just turned my oven to 375 and baked for 12 min. Thank you so, so much for this recipe. Was really, really good and can't wait til my picky husband gets home to rave about this one!

Very good! Quick and easy way to make hamburgers.

These were great. I just have to find the perfect bun recipe.

Very easy to make! Pulled this out of the oven just a few mins ago. After they cooled just enough I tried a bite. So very tasty without the bread. Can't wait to finish making the burgers. DH is a very picky eater, so I'm hoping he will like these. Since he's a big Krystal fan, I'm thinking he will love them. We never lived where there was a White Castle, but we have lived where there was a Krystal. So far, the meat mixture with the onions taste so very much like the Krystals that my family grew up with. Thanks very much for this recipe. Most definitely intend to make again.

I have been wanting to try this recipe for ages and I always remembered it after I already made somthing else. Being from Minnesota, we all know and love sliders, so being able to make them at home....who needs to go out? We normally grill, anytime of the year, however as it is about -15 below zero now, we wanted a burger that we could make in the house. This one is it! Thanks so much for the recipe, I will be makeing this a ton!

I have tried the frozen white castles, but only had "real" Krystals. These were sort of close, but not quite there....I missed the rehydrated minced dried onions they sprinkle across the meat. Also, I don't remember ketchup at all....just mustard.....but those may be Krystals and not White Castle. I enjoyed these very much, but I was thinking of the mustardy onion taste that I know and love. I will make this again, but delete the ketchup. Thanks so much for sharing this....I'd never thought of doing this at home...only do burgers on the grill! Fun to relive old memories. Thanks so much!

These were so good and very easy to prepare. I did use 2 lbs. of meat but otherwise followed the directions exactly. I only baked for the 10 minutes and they still turned out perfect. Thank you so much for this quick and easy way to prepare burgers, this is perfect for those "game" nights or when your running the kids to practices.

Made these for dinner last night. Made 2 batches this morning to put in the freezer. Don't really know about White Castle since I am from the South, but they do remind me alot of Krystal. Actually better & without the heartburn afterwards. Would definitely recommend using a lean ground beef. Thanks for sharing such an easy & wonderful recipe.

These turned out perfect. Super fast and easy to make, my hubby was in love. I will definitely be making these a lot in the future. Thanks sooo much for sharing!

I made a batch for a friend of mine and a batch for my son. I love the fact that they are quick and freeze very well.

We LOVE these burgers and make them all the time! We do as another review suggested and roll them out in a jelly roll pan & bake. I then cut a patty to fit the bun, pop some cheese on there, put it on the bun & microwave for @ 12-14 seconds in a papertowel to get that steamed burger effect. I usually only use half the sheet of burgers for our dinner that night. I then put the other half in a ziplock freezer bag and either freeze for later or refrigerate for next day leftovers. They always turn out great - thanks for the recipe!

We loved these and they are so close to the real thing! I doubled the recipes and froze individual patties on their own. Two to three minutes in the microwave and they're done. They'll be great to have around for lunches! Thanks!

OMG! I can't stop making them! It's like I have White Castle anytime I want! Thanks soooo much! I even took them camping: Prepared them in the RV and fed everyone around a fire. They all wanted more! Perfect!

I thought these were okay; but I've never had Whitecastle Burgers before, so I can't compare. It was just a bit too oniony for me; I did however, like the idea of dinner rolls/mixing the ketchup & mustard together. My bf, however, thought these were delicious ;)

Tasty, easy, juicy burgers! I've never had a White Castle burger so I can't comment on how close this tastes. I did vary the method slightly: I shook the onion soup mix through a sieve & threw out the dehydrated onions as a personal preference; then I made into 4 patties (6 would have been big enough) & grilled.

Tried these long ago and just realized I didn't rate them the 5 they deserve. Because they are so small they cool very quickly so consume ASAP. Freezes well.

Fabulous and easy too!!

Sooo yummy! I made these and my children LOVED them. They didn't even notice the onions. I froze some for another day so hopefully they freeze and recook well!

Amazing! These are very good. I have made these for a main course and for an appetizer and they always get high praise. They are also good reheated.

Sooooo yummy! we don't have white castle in south texas but I have tried krystal burgers. these are a very good alternative! I'm making these for a little get-together with my friends and I know they are gonna go crazy! thanks!

Awesome! thank you so much for sharing this recipe! i made these tonight for my guy and he absolutely LOVED them! :)

I made a batch of these and froze them for DH's lunches. I tasted the meat but never got a burger for myself... ha ha - So they must have been good. I sprinkled the meat mixture with onion flakes and they were nice and moist when the meat was cooked. Only drawback was the time it took to assemble all the little burgers and wrap them individually. I wrapped them in wax paper and DH left them wrapped when he microwaved them and said they were perfect... and now he wants more. Thanks for the recipe, I'm sure I'll use it many times and hopefully will get to try it myself too!

These are awesome!!! If you don't add any condiments and just add a pickle it tastes JUST like a White Castle!! Mmm!!! Thanks! By the way they are White Castles without the repercussions, if you know what I mean!

This is such a hit in my house that I have made this twice in the past month! Great for feeding a hungry teenager. I grew up going to Krystal's with my grandpa, and this tastes just like it! Thanks for such a quick, easy and delish recipe!

These were fun to prepare and so yummy! I used King's Hawaiian rolls, and since my burgers came out thicker than White Castle's, these tasted even better. Great party food or to snack on while watching games or movies. I'll be making these again!

I took these out of the oven, and my husband (HUGE WC fan), was right there. He "sampled" four, before I could even get them on the buns. I think he has told me 3 times in the last 5 minutes, "these are really good, you're going to have to make these again..." Not sure what took me so long to try them, but sure am glad I finally did. I can see I'll be making them a lot!

These were a big hit! I was a little skeptical, but I couldn't be any happier with the results. To warm the buns, I placed a damp paper towel over the top, lightly covered with plastic wrap and microwaved them on high for 40 seconds. This was to try to get them to "steam". Also, I happened to have Beefy Onion soup mix on hand and used that instead. Thanks for posting!

Taste just like Krystals down south. The kids love them!

These were a huge hit at my last Sunday Family Dinner! Though I do think I made mine too thin as they cracked while baking...but luckily they cracked in just the right places....we just loved them

I have never had White Castle burgers but my boyfriend has and said that they tasted some what like them. Either way I love them, after making I freeze them for a quick snack or lunch during the week. Have made several times over the past few months. Thanks!

These were very easy to make. Next time I would like to make them a little thinner. I used someone elses suggestion and covered it with wax paper and used a rolling pin to smooth it out.

My husband said these were spot on for White Castle burgers, and my kids really liked them too. I myself would cut back on the onion soup mix, just as a personal preference. I've never had a White Castle burger so I'm certainly no expert on how they should taste! They were really easy and quick to make, which is always a huge plus. I will definitely be making this recipe again.
