Sides: Mom's Calico Beans

Mom makes these baked beans often for our summer family get togethers. The hamburger and bacon add a lot of flavor. Using a slow cooker is a great way to keep the kitchen cool during hot summer days.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds Ground Beef, cooked and drained
  • 1/2 pound Bacon, cut up and cooked until crispy; drained (mom always uses smoked bacon)
  • 1 onion, diced (may saute onion with meat to make it more tender and less strong)
  • 1 large can pork and beans, (mom uses the large can of Bush's beans - Original Flavor)
  • 1 16 oz. can red kidney beans, drained
  • 1 16 oz. can pinto beans, drained (sometimes Mom substitues the pintos for a can of Garbanzo beans; drained)
  • 1 16 oz. can lima beans, drained
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • salt and pepper to taste if desired

Preparation

Step 1

Mix all together, cook in a crock pot on high for one hour, reduce temperture to low and cook for three additional hours.
