  • 3/4 c sugar
  • 2 c finely ground walnuts
  • 1 1/2 c honey
  • 1 c finely ground almonds
  • 2 ” cinnamon stick
  • 3/4 c sugar
  • 4 lemon slices
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 orange slices
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 package phyllo
  • 1 1/2 c sweet butter, melted

Preparation

Step 1

In saucepan, combine ¾ c sugar and ¾ c water. Bring to a boil, stirring. Add honey, cinnamon stick and lemon and orange slices. Simmer 10 minutes. Strain (measure 2 1/2c)
Mix walnuts, almonds, ¾ c sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Place 2 leaves on a large cookie sheet; brush with melted butter. Stack one-third of the leaves, buttering every other one; sprinkle with nut mixture. Add 6 more leaves brushing every other with butter; add nut mixture. Layer 6 more leaves, nut mixture. End with pastry.
Make diagonal cuts on baklava to form diamonds. Cut through top layer only. Bake 60 minutes. Turn off heat; leave in oven 60 minutes. Remove. Pour cooled syrup over baklava. Cut the whole way through baklava. Cool in pan.
