Preparation

Step 1

Start with enough oats to feed the number of people you are serving. My two littles and I eat 1 cup of oats together. A serving is 1/2 a cup but that is A LOT of oatmeal so most of the time we don’t eat a full serving. You may have to experiment to figure out how much to make without wasting a bunch – but luckily they are cheap ;)

Pour dry oats in a large glass or ceramic cooking dish {NO plastic} and add liquid.

You’ll need twice as much liquid as oats. So, if you cook one cup of dry oats you need 2 cups of liquid.

You can use water and/or milk for the liquid. I like to use some of both. Milk makes the oatmeal a bit more flavorful and creamy. But, since milk isn’t cheap, I mix it half and half – half milk, half water.

Place the dish in the microwave and cook for 5 minutes on high. Stir. Place back in the microwave and cook for 5 more minutes on high. At this point you’ll need to see if most of the liquid has cooked out and taste them to see if they are the right texture/down enough. If they are still a bit liquidy or “chewy” just place them back in and cook for another 2 or 3 minutes or until done.

The oatmeal won’t have much flavor on its own. So, at this point we add things like a spoonful of raw honey, a little more milk or cream, some fresh fruit, and/or nuts. You can also add brown sugar, maple syrup, raisins, or other dried fruit. Stay tuned for my recipe for apple pie oatmeal coming next week! :)
