Bread and Butter Pickles

Ingredients

  • 25 to 35 medium cucumbers
  • 4 large white onions
  • 2 large sweet peppers
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 5 cups cider vinegar
  • 5 cups sugar
  • 2 Tbsp mustard seed
  • 1 Tbsp tumeric
  • 1/2 Tbsp whole cloves

Preparation

Step 1

Wash but don't peel cukes. Slice very thick. The same for the onions and peppers. Combine with salt. Put on ice and let mix set for 3 hours. Drain. Combine vinegar, sugar and spices in large kettle. Bring to a boil and add drained veggies. Heat thoroughly, but do not boil. Pack while hot into hot sterilized jars and seal immediately. Make 5 quarts.
