    cups flour

  • ¼

    cup sugar

    tbsp. baking powder

    tsp. baking soda

  • 1

    tsp. salt

  • cup shortening

  • 2

    pkg. dry yeast

  • 2

    cups buttermilk*

  • canola oil

  • To make buttermilk, mix 1 cup milk with 1 tbsp. lemon juice or vinegar and let sit for about 10 minutes until curdled.


Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in bowl. Cut in shortening. In separate bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water and add with buttermilk to dry ingredients. Mix well but only until dough moistens well. Place in covered bowl and refrigerate to use as needed. To bake biscuits, remove amount desired. Roll out on floured board to 1/2 inch thickness and cut with biscuit cutter. Place on oiled baking pand and turn once to grease both sides. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until nicely brown. Remaining dough will keep in refrigerator for 2 weeks. Makes about 2 to 3 dozen.
