  • 1 cup masoor daal (split orange lentils)
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon zeera (whole cumin seeds)
  • 1/2 teaspoons rye (black mustard seeds)
  • 1/2 jalapeño (chopped)
  • 3 large garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon raw peanuts
  • 6-8 curry patta (curry leaves)
  • 1/8 teaspoons hing (asafetida)
  • 1/4 teaspoon haldi (turmeric)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Step 1

Method:
Boil lentils with 1 ½ cup water and blend when fully cooked
(about 15 minutes). Add rye and zeera to 2 tablespoons of oil
(“vagar”). When seeds start popping, add jalapeños, garlic,
peanuts, curry patta, hing and haldi. After garlic turns light
brown, add boiled daal and stir. Let it cook for 10 minutes on
medium heat. Then add 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Garnish
with chopped cilantro before serving. Serve with rice.
