Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 2/3 cup butter, softened
- 1-3/4 cups sugar
- 3 eggs
- 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1-1/2 cups milk
Preparation
Step 1
1. Grease three 8" x 8" x 2" baking pans; lightly dust each with 1 teaspoon of the cocoa power.
2. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, remaining cocoa powder, baking soda and baking powder. Set aside.
3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
4. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter with electric mixer on medium-high speed for 30 seconds.
5. Add sugar; beat until combined.
6. Add eggs one at a time, beating for 30 seconds after each addition.
7. Beat in chocolate and vanilla.
8. Alternately add flour mixture and milk, beating on low speed until thoroughly combined.
9. Divide batter into prepared pans; spread evenly.
10. Bake for 17 to 20 minutes or until wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
11. Cool in pans on wire rack for 10 minutes.
12. Remove cakes from pan.
13. Transfer cakes to cool on wire rack for 10 minutes.
14. Assemble cake in layers, with choice of frosting/topping between layers.
