Soft Drop Sugar Cookies

By

After my mother-in-law passed on, I helped with cleaning out her house. I found a whole bunch of recipes and will share one that is a favorite of ours. I love it because it's a drop cookie. Fast and easy! When I have the time, they get frosted. When I don't, they don't. Either way, they are delicious! These cookies are delightfully soft and moist. You can frost them if you wish with a white butter frosting.

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup shortening (3/4 cup butter, softened plus 1/4 cup Crisco shortening)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups milk

Preparation

Step 1

1. Sift together and set aside the flour, baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg and salt.

2. Cream until fluffy the sugar and shortening. Add beaten eggs, and the vanilla extract.

3. Then add, alternately, with sifted dry ingredients, the 2 cups of milk, about 1/3 cup at a time. Mix well after each addition.

4. Lightly grease cookie sheets and drop by Tablespoons, leaving 2 or 3 inches between cookies for spreading. Bake at 400 degrees for 12-15 minutes. Makes 4 dozen large cookies.
