Ingredients

  • Bottom Layer:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 lb butter
  • 2 tbs water
  • Top Layer:
  • 1/4 lb butter
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • Powdered Sugar Icing:
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbs boiling water
  • 1 tsp lemon juice

Preparation

Step 1

Bottom Layer:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cut butter into flour. Sprinkle with the water and mix with a fork. Round into a ball and divide in half. Put dough with hands into two 12 x 3" strips. Place strips 3" apart on ungreased baking sheet.

Top Layer:

Mix butter and water in a saucepan and bring to a rolling boil. Add almond extract and remove from heat. Stir in flour immediately, beating vigorously with a wooden spoon. When smooth and thick add one egg at a time, beating again after each addition until smooth. Divide in half and spread one half evenly over each strip of pastry. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes, until topping is crisp and nicely browned. Frost with powdered sugar icing and sprinkle generously with chopped nuts.

Powdered Sugar Icing:

Mix together and blend until smooth.
