How to Make Ginger Beer By Tammy Quinn Mckillip, eHow Contributor

Non-alcoholic ginger beer, like its wholesome cousin root beer is a fun drink to make at home with the family or at a party, to impress your teetotaler friends. Because the ingredients are easier to come by than those of root beer, this is a quick route to home mixology fame or at least a tasty soft drink for thirsty abstainers.

Ingredients

  • 1 gal. Water
  • 4 oz. Dried Gingerroot
  • Juice from a lemon
  • Packet of Active Dry Yeast
  • Approximately 1/2 lb. Sugar.

Preparation

Step 1

Using a meat tenderizer, pound the ginger root to soften it up.

Boil root in a half-gallon of water and then remove from the heat.

Mix one packet of dry yeast with the juice of one lemon and add this to a cup of warm water.

Pour lemon juice mixture into the root-boiling water on the stove.

Add the rest of the water and leave the whole mix to brew for 24 hours.

Pour through a strainer to remove root and then add sugar.

Pour into a clean bottle and place in the refrigerator immediately. Serve chilled for best results.

Tips & Warnings

This recipe should make about 10 12 oz bottles of ginger beer.
