Flank Steak with Balsamic BBQ Sauce

Ingredients

  • 3 cups balsamic vinegar
  • 4 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 medium Spanish onion, coarsely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons ancho chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 heaping tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 canned chipotle chile in adobo, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • Pinch salt and freshly ground black pepper, plus more for seasoning
  • 1 (2-pound) flank steak
  • 1 French baguette, sliced
  • Olive oil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup grated Monterey jack cheese
  • Sliced scallions, for garnish

This was a good, change of pace for how I usually use flank steak. I did make some revisions using what I had and after reading other reviews. I used only 2 cps. of balsamic vinegar (all I had, 4 garlic cloves and 3 chilpotle chiles to suit my taste. I think it would of been better if the steak was marinated in these ingredients or atleast part of them b4 cooking to a sauce. I gave it a 4 star b/c the bbq sauce was the bomb on grilled chicken wings! I do not think the bbq sauce needed the extra cup of vinegar. Since there were no directions, I wonder if part of this was for a marinade.

Amazing! Can take almost 45 min to reduce vinager. Weird, no directions of how 2 make. Here ya go!

Directions:

Put balsamic vinegar in saucepan over med heat. Bring to sim & cook until reduced to 1 cup. Set aside.

Heat 2 tlbs of oil over med-high heat in med saucepan. Add onions & cook til soft, 3-4 min. Add garlic & cook 1 min. Add ketchup & water & bring boil. Reduce heat & sim 5 min. Add reduced vinegar & remain ingredients & sim until thickened, stir occasionally, 10 min. Puree w/blender & season w/salt & pep. Pour in bowl & allow cool.

Brush steak w/remaining 2tbls oil & season liberally w/salt & pep. Grill til golden brown 1 side,4 min turn over & grill other side golden brown,4 min. Move to cooler part of grill away from direct heat. Baste w/sauce & turn several more times til cooked MRare,15 min. move from grill to cut board & loosely tent w/foil. Let rest 10 min be-4 cut against grain into thin slices.
