Ingredients

  • Butter (for the pan)
  • Flour (for the pan)
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 2 cups light brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk
  • Confectioners’ sugar (for sprinkling)

Preparation

Step 1

1. Set the oven at 350 degrees. Butter a 10-inch tube pan and dust it with flour, tapping out the excess.

2. In a bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt to blend them.

3. In an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar until creamy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl several times. Mix in the vanilla.

4. With the mixer set on low speed, add the flour mixture alternately with the milk in 3 additions, beating just until combined. Pour the batter into the pan and smooth the top.

5. Bake the cake for 55 to 60 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Cool the cake in the pan for 10 minutes, then run a blunt knife around the edges to loosen it. Turn the cake out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Dust with confectioners’ sugar.
