Grandma D's Nut Roll

Ingredients

  • Filling:
  • 1 cake yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 cup sweet cream
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups ground walnuts
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

1. Dissolve yeast in warm water; add sweet cream. Cream together butter, shortening and sugar; add eggs one at a time and beat well. Sift flour and salt.

2. To liquid mixture add cream and dry mixture alternately. Beat well. Leave in same mixing bowl. Cover with waxed paper. Place in refrigerator overnight.

3. Cut dough in 4 parts. Roll out very thin on floured board. Spread on filling, put on greased baking sheet, cover with cloth and let stand one hour.

4. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes.

5. Filling: Warm milk; add nuts, sugar, butter, beaten egg and vanilla. Stir to a thin paste. Spread filling on dough and roll like jelly roll.
