BBQ Pulled Pork

By

This meltingly tender shredded pork has been slow-cooked for hours in a sweet and tangy sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoon sweet paprika
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 4 pound(s) boneless pork shoulder blade roast (fresh pork butt), cut into 4 pieces
  • 12 soft sandwich buns or ciabatta rolls, warmed
  • Dill pickles (optional)
  • Potato chips (optional)
  • Hot sauce (optional)

Preparation

Step 1

In 4 1/2- to 6-quart slow-cooker pot, stir onion, ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, tomato paste, paprika, Worcestershire, mustard, salt, and pepper until combined. Add pork to sauce mixture and turn to coat well with sauce.

Cover slow cooker with lid and cook pork mixture on low setting as manufacturer directs, 8 to 10 hours or until pork is very tender.
With tongs, transfer pork to large bowl. Turn setting on slow cooker to high; cover and heat sauce to boiling to thicken and reduce slightly.

While sauce boils, with 2 forks, pull pork into shreds. Return shredded pork to slow cooker and toss with sauce to combine. Cover slow cooker and heat through on high setting if necessary.
Spoon pork mixture onto bottom of sandwich buns; replace tops of buns. Serve sandwiches with pickles, potato chips, and hot sauce if you like.

Yummmmmy! This Pulled Pork is so flavorful and came out so tender--the perfect combo of sweet and tangy. I froze a bag and everything defrosted and reheated beautifully. Will definitely make this gem again!

We had it and it was great. We doubled the brown sugar and ketchup. Great!!!!

My whole family loved it. We doubled the amopunt of brown sugar and ketchup. We will definatly be using this recipe again and again. GREAT!!!!

Have to say for the first time ever trying a pulled pork recipe this wins hands down! I used a pork shoulder with the bone in for more flavor. Took a little extra time to shred the meat but was well worth it! I also doubled the brown sugar and added extra Worcestershire along with adding 1/2 cup of ketchup & bb-q sauce and a little extra tomato paste. Everyone loved it and I will DEFINITELY be making this for years to come.

I've made several other slow-cooker pulled pork recipes & this is the best I've tried! I recommend using BBQ sauce instead of ketchup, increasing cider vinegar & brown sugar to 1/2 cup each, 1/3 cup tomato paste & 3T Worchestershire. I thicken sauce w/3 T corn starch on stovetop & have sauce left over.

Love it! Always a crowd pleaser. I add a tsp or so of liquid smoke to the cooking sauce.

I am not a very good cook and this was my first attempt at pulled pork and it came out great! Would be great for a party. Note that you may want to reduce the sauce on your stove top so it will go faster.

We all love this recipe. I'm going to make it with boneless pork roasts though next time but this is definitely a keeper. I think the sweet paprika is the key!

My husband and I both enjoyed it A LOT!! The only variation I made was too add ancho chilis, we both like a lot of heat!! Delicious and easy, great for parties.

Simple and tasty! It only took about 10 minutes to toss everything into the crock pot, then I went about my day. Leftovers are just as tasty, even 2 days later.

Delicious, The sauce came out watery so add some cornstarch mixed with water to thicken it up. I also added 1/2 tsp red chili flakes to make it spicier.

Delicious. Missing coleslaw on top, now thats southern. But honestly, I get the same results (with added sodium) using equal amounts sweet baby ray's originaland bottle Sweet Baby Ray's Honey BBQ Sauce. A camping standard for us.

This is an amazing recipe that I will go to often! I made it today and it tasted just like southern BBQ. This is the perfect meal for any kind of sports party!

I made this today. This is a simple and fantastic recipe. We didn't have too much left over since everyone went back for more servings. super!!!

This is the first time I've tried to do pulled pork and this is very tasty and easy to make. But mine came out a little bit drier than I'd like. I'm going to double the ketchup & tomato paste next time, 50% more on the brown sugar and maybe go a bit lighter on the salt. Pineapple juice just came to mind too ... I'll have to think about that.

Oops! I forgot to rate this review with the stars! IT WAS WONDERFUL! I'm having the leftovers for lunch & dinner today!

I made this (with a couple variations) for my husband's surprise birthday party & it was a huge hit!! I'm so glad that my first attempt at making pulled pork (other than buying it pre-made in a plastic container and microwaving it) was so great. The recipe was pretty easy to follow & I wasn't afraid to make variations. I used barbeque sauce instead of ketchup & didn't use any spicy materials (no red pepper flakes or chili powder). I put the pork & "marinade" in the pot the night before & threw it in the slow cooker in the morning. I never took it out but used a potato masher to shread the pork as it was cooking - it was soooo easy. I had barbeque sauce on the side for my guests and everyone raved (even my mother-in-law who HATES pork!)

This is absolutely delicious. every member of the household declared it a winner and will be on our weekly recipes from here on out!

This is the best crock pot pulled pork ever! Be sure to reduce the sauce by at least 1/4 for best results I did this on the stove top because it was faster. I also used a full can of tomato paste.

This was so good - I did change a few things - I minced the onion on the foodprocessor, I used 1 cup of brown sugar, and used boneless country style ribs instead of the roast. I have this great cole slaw recipe that I made and added on top. Cole Slaw Recipe - this is a combination of two recipes that I modified 1 bag of Pre-Mixed Slaw 3/4 cup mayo 1/4 cup Dijon 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2 tablespooons buttermilk - if you don't have milk will do, then add 1 teaspoon of extra vinegar 1 teaspoon celery seed 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon of ground pepper 1/8 teaspoon of cayenne Wisk all together then toss slaw mix - you can eat right a way or chill.

I have tried other's but this is by far the easiest and the best.

This recipe is the best for any party! Had it at my halloween parade party last year and there wasn't any left - making it for my girl's night out tonight!! It's the best and so much better made from scratch than using store bought bbq sauce. Love it!!

When you have the option to modify the recipe...in other words have it for 6 instead of 12 then would like the printed version to reflect this. Instead the printed version is for 12. Would prefer to make the recipe and look at the printed version and not look at the recipe on the computer. Thanks

The pork was very tender and easy to throw together in the morning. I used a pork sirloin roast because it had 150calories less per serving than the pork butt. Next time I will substitute the ketchup for BBQ and maybe add less cider vinegar.
