Ingredients
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 sticks (1 cup) butter, softened
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- Confectioners' sugar
Preparation
Step 1
1. Stir together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and cocoa powder in a medium bowl. In another bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy, then add egg and vanilla and mix until combined. Add flour mixture in two parts, mixing gently and scraping the sides of the bowl as necessary. Transfer dough to a large zip-top bag and flatten into a disc. Refrigerate for 2 hours.
2. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and roll to 1/8 inch thick. Cut with a small heart cookie cutter and place cookies on baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from oven and cool completely.
3. Place a stencil letter on each cookie and dust with confectioners' sugar. Remove stencil. Repeat to spell out valentine phrases such as "Love You," "Be Mine" and "Kiss Me."
