Basic Homemade Apple Cider
By zircon50
If you've decided that this year, you want to serve your family and guests homemade apple cider, then know that the process is slightly time-consuming, but, easy to carry out. To start with, you need some sweet apples and some tart ones. Some of the sweet varieties are Red Delicious and Yellow Delicious. Some semi-tart apple varieties are Jonathon and Gala, while a tart apple variety is Granny Smith.
Ingredients
- 3 sweet apples (any of the above given varieties)
- 1 semi-tart apple (any of the above given varieties)
Preparation
Step 1
Wash your apples well, for you want to remove as much of the natural yeast present on them as possible.
Now quarter the apples. Do not take off the skin, for they provide color and nutrients.
Add the apples to a food processor or blender and purée them completely.
Pour the purée into a cheesecloth bag, and then squeeze it over a vessel to collect the juice.
Now, pour it in a saucepan and heat on low without covering for about three hours. Remember not to overcook since the fresh flavor of your apple cider will go away.
Transfer it to a container which you can seal, and once sealed, store at any temperature below 40° F for up to 2 weeks. The natural yeast present in the cider will eventually ferment it, so use it up quickly
