  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 2 cups water 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 4 tablespoons of cream of tartar
  • food coloring

Adapted from

Step 1

Put all of the ingredients into a saucepan. Over a medium heat, stir ingredients together with a wooden spoon. Keep stirring until the mixture comes together and forms a soft dough - this usually only takes about 5 minutes.

When cool, briefly knead the dough if needed for the food coloring to be evenly combined with in the dough. Give to your child to make fun things with.

Note: If the dough is too sticky - add more flour, or if it's too dry - add more water.

Another Note: To make more than one color with this recipe for play dough, do not add the food coloring in step 1. When the play dough has been cooked, divide into separate bowls, add desired colors and briefly knead to evenly combine the color throughout the play dough.

A little bit of food coloring goes a long way.
