Preparation

Step 1

Pll the outer green leaves off the cabbage and set aside (you'll use these to line the bottom of the pan). Place head of cabbage in boiling water, just long enough that you can pull the leaves off without tearing them. Reserve the water for the sauce. Cut the stem out of each cabbage leaf and set aside.

Mix the ground beef, salt, garlic powder, rice and tomato sauce together with your hands. Form into large oblong meatballs. Roll the cabbage leaves around each one.

In another large pot, mix 1 can tomato sauce, 3 cans cabbage water, salt, garlic powder, and sugar together. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, press the green outer leaves of the cabbage into the bottom and place the stuffed cabbage leaves gently on top. You want the larger ones on the bottom and the smaller ones on the top. Mix the remaining tomato sauce with 1 can of hot cabbage water and pour over the top. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer for about 45 minutes. Stir occassionally, by very gently pressing the stuffed cabbage rolls back under the liquid.
