Almond Toffee Bars

Ingredients

  • 1 stick (1/2 c) butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 c packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1 large egg, yolk and white separated
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 1 c all-purpose flour
  • 1 c (6 oz) semisweet chocolate chips, melted as directed on bag
  • 1/2 c slived almonds, toasted
  • 1/2 c almond brickle chips or English toffee bits

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 F.
Line a 9" square baking pan with foil, letting foil extend about 2" above pan at 2 sides.
With mixer on medium speed, beat butter and sugar until creamy.
Beat in egg yolk and almond extract until blended.
Stir in flour just until blended.
With floured fingers, press dough evenly over bottom of prepared pan.
Brush top with slightly beaten egg white.
Bake 25 minutes, until golden brown.
Cool in pan on wire rack.
Spread chocolate over top, sprinkle almonds and brickle chips, pressing them down gently.
Chill about 10 minutes, until chocolate is firm.
Remove from pan by foil to cutting board.
Cut into squares.
