Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk (or 1/4 tsp vinegar to 1/4 cup milk)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • @ 4 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 4 cups flour
  • 21/2 cups applesauce
  • Cream shortening, sugar;

Preparation

Step 1

Cream shortening, sugar; add beaten eggs and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients « together, add alternately with milk (both kinds) to cream mixture until soft dough is formed.

Divide into 6 equal parts. Pat into 9" pans and bake at 400° for 12 min. or until light brown. Brush with melted butter, then cover with hot applesauce.
Stack. Cool.
