Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 pkg yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3 tbs flour
  • 2 tbs sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3-4 cups flour
  • 1/2 stick butter

Preparation

Step 1

Scald milk with butter and cool to lukewarm. Crumble yeast into large bowl and add sugar, warm water and flour to make a smooth paste. Let sit about 10 minutes. Blend eggs, sugar and salt into lukewarm milk and butter mixture. Add yeast mixture and mix well. Gradually add flour, beating until dough is smooth and too stiff to beat with a spoon. turn dough onto floured surface, kneading gently about 10 minutes, adding only enough flour to ease handling of dough. Place dough in lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat entire dough with oil. Cover with cloth and let rise to double. Re-knead on lightly floured surface about 2 minutes. cover and let rise again to almost double. Roll out on floured board into rectangular shape and cut into 3 strips. dot center of each strip with butter. Braid strips. Place one one end of braid in the center of a greased and floured round 9 x 3 1/2 inch pan. Coil the dough around in a circle to fit pan. Let rise again in a warm place about 30-35 minutes. Brush top lightly with an egg wash mixture. Bake one hour at 350°.
