Ingredients

  • Cake:
  • 3 squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 1/4 cups sifted cake flour
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 1/4 cups brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Chocolate fudge frosting:
  • 4 squares unsweetened chocolate
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 package icing sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Cake:
1. Melt chocolate.
2. Grease and flour 2 9" cake pans.
3. Sift flour, baking soda, salt onto wax paper.
4. Beat butter until soft.
5. Add brown sugar and eggs.
6. Beat at high speed until fluffy.
7. Beat in vanilla and cooled melted chocolate.
8. Stir in dry ingredients alternately with sour cream, beating well with wooden spoon after each addition until batter is smooth.
9. Stir in boliing water.
10. Pour into pans, bake at 350F for 35 minutes.
11. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, turn onto wire racks, cool completely.

Icing:
1. Combine chocolate and butter in saucepan.
2. Place over low heat until melted.
3. Combine sugar, milk, and vanilla.
4. Stir until smooth.
5. Add chocolate.
6. Set bowl in pan of ice and water, beat with wooden spoon until thick.
