Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Split the French bread in half lengthwise. Set aside.

Place the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and saute the onion and bell pepper until soft. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned. Remove from the heat, drain if needed, and add the Parmesan cheese, salt, Italian seasoning and pizza sauce.

Place two sheets of aluminum foil on a baking sheet. Spread the ground beef mix evenly on both sides of the bread and place each on a piece of the aluminum foil, cupping the foil up around the bread. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the bread and fold down the aluminum foil to expose the bread. Top the bread with the mozzarella and return to the oven for an additional 8 to 10 minutes or until cheese is melted and just beginning to lightly brown.

Remove and let rest for about 5 minutes. Cut each half into slices and serve.

Also works well with a variety of breads. In the picture, I used a round boule loaf because that is what I had in the house at the time. Whatever bread you use, just slice it into serving sized pieces when you remove it from the oven.
