Pineapple Upside Down Cherry Smash Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • (Vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box)
  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained, juice reserved
  • 1 can cherry pie filling

Preparation

Step 1

1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 13x9" pan.
2. Add enough water to reserved pineapple juice to measure 1 cup. Make cake batter as directed on box, substituting pineapple juice mixture for the water.
3.Mix butter, brown sugar and maple syrup with a fork. Pour mixture into the bottom of pan.
4.Evenly, spread crushed pineapple across the top of the brown sugar mixture.
5.Pour prepared cake batter over the top of the pineapple.
6.Spoon cherry pie filling across the top of the cake. As the cake bakes, the cherries sink down into the batter. Bake for approximately 40-45 minutes. When cake is done, let it sit for about 10 minutes. Flip out onto serving tray. Serve warm or chilled.
