Red Hot Apple Pie-Dion Metz

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup red hot cinnamon candies
  • 6-8 sliced granny smith apples
  • 1 pie crust (package or homemade)
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar
  • 3/4 c. all-purpose flour

Step 1

For filling: In skillet, combine water, candies and sugar. Stir over medium heat until candies dissolve. Add sliced apples and simmer until just tender. Allow to cool before placing in pie crust.
For crumb topping: Mix butter, sugar and flour until it resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle crumbs over filling.
Bake at 400 for 50-55 minutes or until crumb crust is golden and baked. Serve hot or warm with vanilla ice cream.
This came from a conversation with my grandmother about ten years ago. We decided to use basic Betty Crocker recipes for the candied apples and apple pie with crumb topping, so your favorite recipes can be substituted, too. No matter the recipes used, though, I lean toward granny smith apples and the crumb topping. And I like the texture of the skin on the apples, but that is baker’s choice.
