Moose Bread

Said to have originated with Native American tribe Micmac indians indigenous to northeastern New England and Canada's Atlantic provinces. Hearty ans sweet, it's similar to what we know as the popular baked-bean accomplaniment, brown bread.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup brown raisins

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F/ Beat molasses and egg in a large bowl,. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, sugar and salt. Add flour mixture to egg-molasses mixture, and mix well. Fold in raisins. Pour into greased 9-inch square baking dish and bake 45 minutes, until bread springs back when touched lightly in the middle.
