    slices white sandwich bread

    C butter

    C sugar

  • tsp cinnamon

    tsp nutmeg

    lbs fugi apples

  • tsp lemon juice

  • ½

    C packed brown sugar

  • ¼

    C water

  • 4

    large eggs

  • C milk

  • ¼

    tsp salt

  • 1

    C cheddar cheese (optional)


Preheat oven to 350. Spread one side of bread slices with half of butter. Mix together 1/2 C sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg and sprinkle over slices. Arrange on baking sheet and toast until brown. About 15 min. Cool toast and quarter each slice. 24 triangles. Peel, core and slice apples. Toss with lemon juice. In a large skillet, melt 1/4 C butter. Add brown sugar, apples and water. Cook covered over med heat about 10 min. Remove cover and cook until apples tender and most liquid is absorbed. Butter oblong 13x9 in pan. Arrange 1 layer of toast. Spoon half of apple mixture over and sprinkle with 1/2 of cheese. Repeat toast and apple layers and arrange extra triangles around rim of dish. In a bowl whisk together eggs, remaining 1/2 C sugar, milk, and salt. Pour over apple and bread mixture and refrigerate at least an hour and up to 1 day. Bake at 350 for 30 min then sprinkle with remaining 1/2 C cheese and bake an extra 15 min
