SOPAPILLAS

Ingredients

  • 1 T baking powder
  • 2 C flour
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 1 T shortening
  • 2/3 C warm water
  • Fat for frying
  • sugar and cinnamon

Preparation

Step 1

Stir together dry ingredients. Cut in shortening until it resembles cornmeal. Gradually add water; stir with fork. (Dough will be crumbly). Turn out on a floured surface and knead into a smooth ball. Divide in half; let stand 10 minutes. Roll each half to 12 x 10 inch rectangle. Cut into 1 1/2" squares. Do NOT reroll or patch dough. Fry a few at a time in a deep fat fryer at 400 degrees until golden. Drain on paper towel. Serve hot after they have been rolled in sugar and cinnamon mixture.
