Ingredients
- 1 clove garlic
- 2 T butter
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and sliced very thin
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup water
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt
- 1 1/2 cup Swiss cheese
- Fresh ground pepper
- nutmeg
- 2/3 cup heavy cream
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Rub a baking dish with the garlic and butter.
In a saucepan combine milk, water, bay leaf, potatoes and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, stir, reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are tender.
Drain the potatoes and layer half of them in the buttered baking dish (be sure to discard the bay leaf). Sprinkle on half of the cheese and season with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Spread out remaining potatoes and top wtih seasonings and cheese. Pour the heavy cream over the potatoes.
Bake for 45 minutes to an hour or until the top is golden and brown.
