Ingredients
- 4-3/4 to 5-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 packaged yeast
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons grated orange rind
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/3 cup butter
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 cup finely chopped almonds
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 1 tablespoon water
- Pearl sugar
- Candied cherries halved
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In mixing bowl combine 2 cups flour, yeast, sugar, rind and salt. Heat milk, water and butter until warm (120 to 130 degrees). Add to flour mixture. Add 2 eggs. Blend, then beat 3 minutes at medium speed. Stir in almonds and enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead 5 minutes. Place in greased bowl, turning to grease top. Cover, let rise about 15 minutes.
Punch down dough. Divide in half. Form into a triangle 10" wide and 12" high. Place on greased cookie sheet. Make 2 diagonal cuts in the base. Pull dough from truck. Make 8 diagonal cuts to form the branches. Cover, let rise about 15 minutes. Combine egg and water, brush coffeecake. Sprinkle with pearl sugar on branches, placed candied cherry halves. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool on racks.
