Crackled Sugar Cookies

By

This is by far the prettiest, easiest (no rolling) and best tasting sugar cookie I have ever made. They look like they came right out of the bakery. Try them-- then stand back and wait for the oohs and aahs!!!!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3 large egg yolks, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Preparation

Step 1

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease two baking sheets. Cream sugar and butter together until light. Beat in yolks and vanilla. Sift together the measured sifted flour, baking soda and cream of tartar then fold into the butter sugar mixture.

2. Form dough into walnut size balls. Place 2" apart on the cookie sheets. Do not flatten.

3. Bake for about 11 minutes until the tops are cracked and just turning color. Cool on cookie sheet 2 minutes.

Best chewy sugar cookies recipe and with a few ingredients. I don't see how any one wouldn't like these cookies. They are crispy on the outside and slightly chewy in the middle. They are not too sweet and so buttery. I don't eat sweet that much but I love these. My family devoured them as soon as they came out of the oven. By the way, I tested half a batch flattened and half I didn't flattened. Don't lose faith because they do flatten out the last 5 minutes into beautiful cracked round cookies before your eyes...So it is not necessary to flatten them.

I made these for my cookie trays this year, and they were my favorite! They were done when they crackled and came out perfectly. Mine were chewy with a little crunch, but I love them that way. These have a great flavor and so much better than regular sugar cookies!

These are beautiful and so good! Nice texture and flavor - not at all dry and bland like so many sugar cookie recipes. Everyone was disappointed when they realized they were all gone - so I guess that means I'll be making them again. I rolled the dough in sugar before baking - I also added a few drops of amaretto to the dough.

These turned out perfectly! I made them with my 4 yr old son, who has been begging me to bake cookies all week. It was very easy to mix up and he loved rolling the dough into balls. we rolled the balls in white sugar and some multi-colored sprinkles, and it worked fine. The sprinkles did melt a little on the cookies, but my son wanted sprinkle cookies! This recipe is a keeper. This is what I consider a classic, crackly, soft and chewy sugar cookie... like the ones I like to get at the grocery bakery.

Just made these for Christmas Eve, and they were WONDERFUL! I didn't want to take the time to make cut out cookies and these were quick, the dough was easy to work with, and they tasted delicious! I rolled into balls that were a little larger than walnuts and then coated in white sugar and sprinkles. The spread out nicely, but not too thin. They were crispy around the edges and chewy, almost cakey, in the middle. Five Stars for sure!!
