Ingredients
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 eggs, separated
- 2 1/2 cup sifted cake flour
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 1/2 cup cold water
Preparation
Step 1
1. Cream shortening and 1 cup of the sugar till light. Add vanilla and egg yolks, one at a time beating well after each.
2. Sift together dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture alternately with cold water, beating after each addition.
3. Beat egg whites till soft peaks form; gradually add 3/4 cup of sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
4. Fold into batter; blend well.
5. Bake in 2 greased and lightly floured 9 x 1 1/2 inch round baking pans, at 350 degrees for about 30 to 35 minutes or 9 x 13 inch pan. Check at 25 minutes. Do not overcook
