Hamburger Steak with Mushroom Gravy

  • 4

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground sirloin, shaped into four patties
  • salt, to taste
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 4 ounces white or cremini mushrooms (stems removed), sliced
  • 1/2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 cup beef or chicken stock
  • 1 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon worcestershire sauce

Preparation

Step 1

Sear the "Steaks":
Preheat the oven to 200F. On the stovetop, heat a large saute pan on medium high. Season the patties with salt and pepper. Add the oil to the hot pan, swirl, and add the patties. Cook them until they're browned on both sides and medium rare, 3 to 4 minutes per side. Transfer the patties to a baking sheet and place it in the oven to keep them warm.

Saute the Vegetables:
Add the onions, garlic, and mushrooms to the saute pan and cook until they begin to brown, 5 to 7 minutes.

Make the Gravy:
Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir with a wooden spoon to coat. Stir in the stock, breaking up any lumps, and then stir in the ketchup, soy sauce, and Worcestershire. Cook until the gravy thickens, 2 to 3 minutes. Serve the patties over mashed potatoes or sauteed spinach (or both), topped with gravy.
