CHEESE TWISTS

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 5 tablespoons butter, well chilled (margarine will not work)
  • 4 oz. Cheddar cheese, shredded (about 1 cup)
  • 2 tablespoons ice water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Sift together flour, salt and cayenne into large bowl. Cut in butter with pastry blender until coarse crumbs are formed. Add cheese, toss to combine. Combine water and lemon juice in small bowl. Add to flour mixture, stirring with fork until mixture forms dough and comes together. Add another 1 teaspoon water, if necessary.

Divide dough in half. Keep one half covered. Roll other half out on lightly floured surface into 10" x 7" rectangle. Cut dough in half to form two 7" x 5" rectangles. Cut each in 14 5" x 1/2" strips. Twist each strip 3-4 times. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake in preheated 400 degree oven for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack. Repeat with remaining dough. Twists can be stored in airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
