Ingredients
- 1 c. lukewarm water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 c. milk
- 1 pkg. yeast
- 6 c. flour
- 5 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tsp. salt
- 4 Tablespoons melted shortening
- extra melted shortening to brush over rolls
Preparation
Step 1
Add yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar to warm water. Stir and let stand 10 minutes. Boil milk, add 5 tablespoons sugar, salt and cool to lukewarm. Add to yeast.
Add 3 cups of flour and beat until smooth. Add 4 tablespoons melted shortening and 3 more cups of flour or enough to handle dough. Knead well.
When thoroughly combined, place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise until double (about 1 to 1 1/2 hours). Punch down and let rise again in a warm place until double, about 40 minutes. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut with round biscuit cutter. Place in greased pan, brush with melted shortening and let rise until double. Bake about 15 minutes at 400 degrees until golden brown.
