"THE BEST" SUGAR COOKIES

This recipe belongs to Charlotte Gorrell, a well-known Fort Wayne caterer in the 1960's and 70's. It was included, along with several other of her recipes in the Allen County Medical Auxiliary’s Potpourri II..

Ingredients

  • 1 c. butter
  • 2 c. granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 6 c. flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. lemon extract

Preparation

Step 1

Mix sugar, butter, eggs and salt. Add 1 teaspoon soda to buttermilk; add 3 teaspoons baking powder to flour. Alternate buttermilk and flour mixtures with sugar mixture and mix. Add lemon and vanilla. Chill dough, covered, at least 2 hours. Roll small portions on floured counter. Use favorite cutters. Place on greased cookie sheets and bake at 350º 10-12 minutes. Do not overbake. They are best soft.
