Potatoes Au Gratin

Ingredients

  • 4 russet potatoes cut into 1/4 inch slices
  • 1 onion cut into slices
  • S & P
  • 3 T butter
  • 3 T flout
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 2 C milk
  • 1 1/2 C shredded cheddar cheese

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 400, butter a heavy casserole dish

Layer half the potatoes in the bottom of a heavy casserole
add the onions
Layer the remaining potatoes and season with S & P

In a medium sauce pan melt the butter and stir in the flour and salt and cook for at least one minute or until the flour is cooked.

Stir in milk and cook until mixture has thickened.

Add cheese all at once and stir until melted.

Pour the cheese mixture over the potatoes, cover and cook for 1 and 1/2 hours.

Remove cover for last fifteen minutes to allow top to brown.
