Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 3/4 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • Salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Cayenne pepper
  • 6 hamburger buns

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook, stirring, until browned, 6 to 8 minutes. Drain the beef on paper towels to remove excess fat. Return the beef to the skillet and add the onion and garlic. Cook, stirring, over medium-high heat until the onion is soft, about 3 minutes.

Reduce the heat to medium and add the vinegar. Cook, stirring to loosen the browned bits on the bottom of the pan, for 1 minute. Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, and brown sugar and stir to blend. Season with salt, black pepper, and cayenne. Bring to a gentle boil, reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, place the buns on a baking sheet and warm in the oven for 5 minutes.

Spoon an equal amount of the beef mixture on the bottom half of each bun and cover with the top half. Serve warm.
