Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 c. low-fat milk
  • 1/2 c. water

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 400° F. Combine flour, soda and salt. Add milk and half the water. Stir until dry ingredients are just moistened. Add more water, as necessary, to make a soft dough. Place dough on a lightly floured surface. Knead briefly; shape into a round loaf. Put on a lightly greased baking sheet. Cut a bold cross on top; extend cuts over the sides so the bread will not crack while baking. Bake in oven 25 - 30 minutes, or until bread is golden.
Tip to Test for Doneness: Remove bread from sheet and tap on the bottom. If the bread sounds hollow, it's done. If not, return to baking sheet and continue to cook.
