Ingredients

  • 1 envelope yeast
  • 1/2 tsp. sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 4 cups flour

Step 1

Dissolve yeast in sugar and 1/4 cups warm water. Stir in remaining 1 cup water. Mix salt with 4 cups flour in large bowl. Add yeast mixture. If dough is not stiff enough add additional flour. Knead 10 mins. or until dough feels elastic. Round dough into a ball. Place in lightly greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover; let rise in warm place until double in bulk, 45 mins. or longer.

Pinch off a small ball of dough and roll between hands to form a coil. Shape.

Dissolve 4 tsp. of baking soda in 1 qt. water and bring to a boil. Drop 1 pretzel at a time in boiling water and let boil 1 min. or until pretzel floats. Remove, drain on cloth towel. Salt on one side and put on buttered baking sheet.

Bake at 475 for 12 mins.
