Ingredients
- 2 c. chopped walnuts
- 2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/3 c. sugar
- 1 pkg. (about 1 lb.) fresh, refrigerated filo dough or the same amount of frozen filo, thawed in the refrigerator
- 1/2 lb. butter, melted
- SYRUP
- 2 c. sugar
- 2 c. water
- 3 Tbsp. honey
- 2 tsp. lemon juice
Preparation
Step 1
In a bowl, combine walnuts, cinnamon, & sugar. Brush a 10x13" baking pan w/butter. Spread a sheet of waxed paper on work surface. Working quickly, gently spread 1 sheet of chilled filo dough on the waxed paper. Cut to fit pan. Quickly brush with melted butter. Top with 2nd sheet. Place in baking pan. Repeat buttering & layering until 3 double ;sheets have been layered (6 layers total)
Sprinkle 7th sheet with some of walnut mizture & layer in pan. Repeat with more single sheets until all of walnut mizture has been used (about 10 more single sheets) Add 6 more individually buttered sheets on top. With a serrated knife, cut in strips lengthwise & then diagonally to reeate small diamond shapes.
Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hr or until golden brown. While baking, make syrup. Put sugar, water, honey & lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, simmer until syrup spins a thread. (Dip spoon into syrup & pull a litttle out to see if it forms a thread; or just simmer for about 15 minites. Remove from heat-stir-cool.
Remove backlava from oven-recut-gradually pour cooled syrup over hot baklava.
