French Toast Strata
From the 35th Anniversary Cookbook - Melbourne Branch of the American Association of University Women (pg 89)
An excellent make ahead breakfast for company or holidays. Prepare the night before and refrigerate overnight, bake while showering!
- 8 slices of firm bread (crusts removed) - alternately cinnamon raisin bread can be used (1 loaf)
- 2 pkgs (8 oz size) cream cheese, cut into 1/2 to 1 inch cubes
- 1 dozen eggs, beaten
- 2 C milk
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/3-1/2 C maple syrup
Preparation time 20mins
Cooking time 65mins
Place half of bread in bottom of 9x13 Pyrex glass baking dish/casserole pan.
Cube cream cheese and place in a layer over bread cubes.
Add remaining cubed bread.
Combine beaten eggs, milk, cinnamon and syrup and gently pour over bread and cheese.
Refrigerate over night (VERY IMPORTANT)
Bake at 375 for 45 minutes, or until nicely puffed and light brown.
Cut into squares and serve with extra warmed maple syrup.
