- 1 1-Pound loaf unsliced french bread, crusts trimmed
- 2 cups milk
- 5 eggs, beaten
- 2 Tlb. sugar
- 3/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- Pinch of freshly ground nutmeg
- Oil for deep frying
- Whipped butter and mapel syrup
Cut bread into 4x2x2-inch rectangular logs. Let stand to dry slightly.
Blend milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg in meduim bowl. Pour into shallow pan large enough to hold bread in 1 layer. Arrange bread in milk mixture, turning to coat all sides. Chill until liquid is absorbed, several hours or overnight.
Heat oil to 360 degrees F. Fry logs in batches until golden brown on all sides, about 3 to 4 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Serve immediately with whipped butter and maple syrup.
