Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 red onion, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, diced
  • 5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 lb. ground pork sausage
  • 2 teaspoons oregano
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 12 slices (about 3/4 lb.) mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup parmesan cheese

Preparation

Step 1

1. 1 Heat 1 Tablespoon of the olive oil in a large saute pan over medium heat, and saute diced onion, bell pepper, and chopped garlic for about 5 minutes.
2. In a large mixing bowl, pour milk over the bread crumbs and stir until liquid is absorbed. Add sauteed vegetables, beef, sausage, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, black pepper, and beaten egg. Mix thoroughly and for into 16-2 inch meatballs.
3. In same large pan, heat remaining 1 Tablespoon olive oil over medium heat and cook meat, browning them completely, until internal temperature reaches 165°F. on an instant read thermometer. In each roll, place 4 meatballs, 1/4 cup marinara sauce, and 3 slices mozzarella. Place on baking sheet and broil until cheese melts. Top each with 1 Tablespoon Parmesan cheese and serve.
