Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 lg clove garlic, halved
  • 6 slices Italian bread (1 1/2" thick)
  • 3/4 cup Fontina cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup Monterey Jack cheese, grated
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 2 lg eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/4 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/4 tsp salt - adjust to taste
  • 1/4 tsp white pepper, freshly ground, if possible

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375 degree F. Butter a 9" pie plate or round baking dish. Rub the buttered dish well with the cut sides of the garlic. Generously butter the bread slices on one side and cut each slice into quarters. Arrange the bread, buttered - side up, in the pan. Spread the tree cheeses evenly over the top of the bread. Combine the eggs, milk, mustard, salt and pepper in a mixing bowl - whisk until thoroughly blended.

Pour over the bread and cheese. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until set and lightly browned on top. Cut into wedges and serve immediately.
