Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 400. Butter a 9 x 11 inch baking dish. Peel potatoes, placing them in a bowl of cold water. Cut potatoes lengthwise into slices 1/8 inch thick. Place potatoes in a single layer in the dish, fanning each one out so that each slice slightly overlaps its neighbor to cover the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, nutmeg and some of the garlic. Continue to make layers. Pour cream over potatoes half a cup at a time, pressing down firmly on potatoes after each addition to distribute cream evenly. When done, all cream should be added and just cover potatoes when they are pressed. Cover dish with foil and poke a few holes in it. Bake one hour. Remove foil, and bake until potatoes have absorbed cream and top is golden. About 20 minutes longer.
