Waldorf Salad

By

Next time you're in the supermarket, check out all the different colors and shapes of apples. Some are just right for baking because they hold their shape, and some are ideal for making applesauce because they don't! Apples that are great for snacking are great in salads, too. For this salad, try using Gala, Red Delicious, or Jonagold apples—they're nice and crisp served raw.

This simple salad got its name over 110 years ago from a fancy hotel in New York called The Waldorf-Astoria. Here's proof that anyone - not just a chef - can create a delicious recipe: Oscar Tschirky, the maitre d'hôtel (or hotel's dining room manager) stirred together apples, celery, and mayonnaise in the original version. Chopped walnuts and other ingredients were added later. So take a tip from Oscar - get creative in the kitchen, and your recipe could be famous someday!
