Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cups packed brown sugar
  • 1 T. cornstarch
  • 1 ½ t. vanilla
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 T. baking powder
  • 1/3 cups chopped, peeled tart apples
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 T. granulated sugar
  • ½ t. ground cinnamon

Preparation

Step 1

Mix brown sugar, cornstarch, and 1/8 t. salt. Add 2 cups cold water; cook till bubbly. Cook and stir 2 minutes more. Add 1 t. vanilla and 2T. butter. Pour into 13x9x2-inch baking dish. Combine flour, the ¼ cup granulated sugar, baking powder, and ½ t. salt. Cut in shortening. Stir in apple. Stir in milk and remaining vanilla till moistened. Drop by tablesppons over syrup. Combine the 1 T. granulated sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle on top. Dot with remaining butter. Bake at 350o for 50-55 minutes. Serves 10.
