Ingredients
- 2/3 cup ice water
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups shortening, chilled
Preparation
Step 1
Mix water, egg yolk and vinegar together. Measure flour, salt and shortening into large bowl; add liquid and mix well. (You do not have to cut in the shortening). Chill at least 1/2 hour for easier handling. Divide into 4 portions, roll as needed. Bake according to pie recipe directions.
Hints: Brush bottom of crust with beaten egg white and let dry before filling with custard, pumpkin, etc. This will seal the crust so your filling won't soak in. For beautiful color, brush sides of crust with equal parts egg and oil.
